In this edition’s theme highlight, we explore whether and how these moves could help these two internet giants unlock greater value for their shareholders.

Revenue figures are adjusted (non-GAAP). Local Services revenues for KWEB companies increased 78% in the fourth quarter. Strong consumer subsidy spending from JD, Meituan, and Alibaba ensured consistent user retention and steady volume increases, while weighing on profitability. JD, in particular, tripled revenue from JD Now, a specialized service offering delivery of various consumer goods within 30 minutes to urban consumers. However, growth could slow as the platforms have agreed to reduce spending on promotions and prioritize profitability. Education technology and private tutoring platform TAL Education increased revenue by 27%. TAL also unveiled a new learning device for children ages six to eleven, called the “AI Buddy”, at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where it received a “CES Picks” award. AI & Cloud revenues increased 25%. Tencent made WeChat and QQ compatible with the popular international agentic AI platform Open Claw. Meanwhile, Alibaba released the latest version of its Qwen large language model (LLM), projected cloud revenues doubling every year over the next five years, and said its chipmaking unit T-Head is on track to reach RMB 10 billion in annual revenue, close to the annual revenue of Cambricon, a leading China-based fabless chipmaker. OpenAI announced it would be closing its Sora video creation platform, effectively ceding the space to Kuaishou’s Kling AI globally. Kling AI had already achieved monthly active users (MAUs) of nearly 12 million, while Sora had only reached 2 to 4 million MAUs. Healthcare platforms JD Health and Ali Health reported results for the second half of 2025, with revenue increasing 18%, on average. Ali Health beat estimates on revenue and net income for the full year of 2025. Both platforms benefited from a shift in distribution strategy by many pharmaceutical companies, from hospital procurement to direct online sales. This shift has been partly driven by regulatory reforms and anti- graft initiatives in recent years. Recruitment platform Kanzhun, which operates the popular “BOSS Zhipin” job search app, increased revenue 14% in the fourth quarter. Management noted strong demand for employment driven by Lunar

Entertainment revenues increased 13%. Bilibili and Tencent Music both benefited from improved monetization for their premium subscribers. Logistics revenues increased 11%. JD Logistics, a logistics spinoff from JD.com, increased revenue by 22%, likely benefiting from increased usage on the parent platform for instant commerce. Platform Full Truck Alliance, sometimes referred to as the “Uber of trucking”, increased revenue and profitability in the fourth quarter through efforts to overhaul its model to favor commission-based orders, rather than wholesale future capacity sales. The company also reported a 12% increase in completed orders. Social Media revenues increased 10% on average, led by Tencent’s WeChat, which benefited from a pickup in advertising spending driven by new AI tools. Meanwhile, despite seeing more tepid growth than WeChat, Weibo noted strong growth in the E-Commerce and auto segments of its social media advertising sales and expects this momentum to continue throughout 2026. Travel revenues increased 9%. High demand for domestic travel among China’s consumers, especially for experience-based bookings, led to decent growth for travel booking platforms. Trip.com saw strong growth in both its overseas business and domestic China travel. Gaming revenues increased 6%. However, key game makers within KWEB delivered highly variable results. Meanwhile, NetEase’s revenue was lower than expected in the fourth quarter as demand for legacy titles was subdued. Finally, XD turned profitable thanks to improving economics for its game-sharing platform, known as TapTap, in China. E-Commerce revenues increased a modest 4%, challenged by a high base in the final quarter of 2025. Trade-in subsidy usage has declined since then, as many households have already taken advantage of the program by upgrading home appliances and other large items. Meanwhile, core domestic commerce growth was sluggish for both JD.com and Alibaba, though PDD Holdings experienced strong growth in both domestic and international commerce thanks to an advertising push and expansion into lower-tier cities and rural areas. FinTech revenues also increased 4%, led by insurance platform Zhong An, which benefited from growth in new categories such as pet and drone insurance. Meanwhile, growth was challenged for consumer lending platforms like Qfin, which faced regulatory caps on interest rates and new loan origination rules that tightened liquidity. Meanwhile, Tencent’s WeChat Pay continued to experience strong growth. Live Streaming revenues increased 4%. East Buy rebounded from the loss of some celebrity key opinion leaders (KOLs) in 2024. Traditional Search revenue for Baidu has hit record lows, down 15%, as AI-powered search continues to take market share. This led the company’s CEO to effectively declare that AI has become the “new core” of Baidu during the company’s earnings call. Auto platform Autohome reported an -18% decrease in revenue, driven by lower advertising spending from internal combustion engine (ICE) automakers. Meanwhile, the platform faced strong competition from short-video platforms for advertising spending from electric vehicle (EV) brands. Lead generation and customer support services for dealers were more resilient but did not offset declines in the company’s core businesses. Real Estate platform KE Holdings reported a 29% decline in revenue, which its management attributed to a high base effect for the new home transactions in the final quarter of 2025. Large language models (LLMs) and other AI systems demand extreme amounts of computing power. Seemingly, the only limitation to their development is the quantity and quality of the chips that they can access. The valuations of the world’s largest chip designers and manufacturers are a testament to the importance of chips to AI development. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) is a key manufacturer, or fabricator, of the high-end microchips that AI systems run on, and has seen its share price increase 429% since Chat GPT launched in November. Meanwhile, Nvidia, a key chip designer, also known as a fabless chipmaker, has seen its share price rise 1,270% since ChatGPT was launched.

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Facing an uncertain supply of high-end chips due to US export restrictions under the Biden administration, Alibaba and Baidu invested heavily in their own chip design capabilities. Today, these ventures have the potential to help them unlock significant shareholder value. A simple Sum of The Parts (SOTP) analysis of Baidu and Alibaba, including their respective chip design arms, Kunlunxin and T-Head, suggests markets may not be valuing these internet giants properly. Although chip design accounts for a small portion of revenue for both companies, if these businesses could command the same valuation multiples as global peers like Nvidia or China-based fabless peers like Cambricon, both businesses would be worth significantly more.

Rather, they are customers of fabricators such as TSMC, focusing instead on chip design. Kunlunxin is estimated to have generated $500 million in revenue in 2025.6 Its revenue mix is currently split evenly between external customers and chips for internal use within Baidu’s massive cloud server network. The mobile provider was also a key strategic investor in the unit, valuing it at $3 billion when it invested in a funding round in mid- 2025. Kunlunxin’s product focus is purely on AI accelerators, specialized chips meant to speed up inference operations. T-Head is estimated to have generated $1.5 billion in revenue in 2025. Like Kunlun, T-Head benefits from both external and internal demand. However, T-Head receives approximately 60% of its revenue from external customers, whereas Kunlunxin only received 50% of its revenue from external customers. The continued uncertainty of overseas chip availability to China-based customers remains an opportunity for these players, alongside Cambricon. Potential Spin Off Scenarios Baidu has already filed for a Hong Kong IPO of Kunlunxin. However, Alibaba has not indicated any intended change for T-Head within its corporate structure. Below are three possible spin-off scenarios for Kunlunxin and T-Head. Scenario #1: The parent companies could choose to keep the IPO float low and maintain a large stake, potentially a controlling one, in the business. If the spinoffs are in high demand with investors, this is an ideal strategy, as the companies would benefit most from the potential appreciation of the floated shares. This would be similar to how JD.com maintained a 50% ownership stake in its own logistics business after spinning it off as JD Logistics through a Hong Kong IPO in 2021.7 Scenario #2: The parent companies could float the entirety of their fabless chipmaking units on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and not keep a meaningful stake. We believe this is unlikely, as the units are relatively small and will find it difficult to attract sufficient outside investor demand to lead to the valuations mentioned above on their own. This would lead to a potential one-time windfall for the companies’ shareholders, which could be distributed to investors as a dividend or be reinvested into their businesses. Given Baidu’s currently high cash position, we believe the company would likely decide to distribute the windfall from the IPO as a dividend.
![]()
20 kraneshares.com info@kraneshares.com +1 (212) 933 0393 Back to Top ↑Scenario #3: Alibaba could decide not to follow in Baidu’s footsteps and keep its T-head unit wholly owned inside the company. This would limit the increase in its share price, though market sentiment around chip IPOs stemming from Baidu’s spinoff may potentially raise Alibaba’s valuation if its revenue share increases. The company could still decide to pursue an internal restructuring, thereby calling out T-Head as a key component of its business and breaking out its revenue consistently. Alibaba pursued a similar strategy in 2023 by breaking itself into six businesses without any spin-offs. This may have triggered investors to look at the company through the lens of an SOTP analysis. Alibaba’s stock has risen over 80% since that restructuring.² Conclusion Alibaba and Baidu are full-stack AI value generators if you include their chipmaking units in a holistic analysis of their businesses. A sum of the parts of analysis suggests that these units are undervalued relative to comparable businesses. Spinning off their chipmaking units, or at least forcing the market to value them separately, could generate significant shareholder value.

Management noted strong results from promotional periods throughout 2025, such as Singles’ Day and the Spring Festival. Online marketing and transaction services contributed significantly to the revenue increase for the quarter. Although PDD does not break out geographic revenue in their earnings reports, based on internet traffic data, we believe that international commerce grew faster than China commerce in the fourth quarter, and that Temu could be approaching 40% of overall sales. However, NetEase continues to implement AI enhancements across all its existing titles, and the game maker’s pioneering AI-powered, lifelike non-personal characters (NPCs) should help with user retention over the long term. Meanwhile, promotions during the Lunar New Year holiday may help reverse the slowdown in growth for key titles. Although NetEase slowed the pace of share buybacks in the fourth quarter, the company still intends to repurchase nearly $4 billion in shares by 2029. Meanwhile, higher tax expenses weighed on net income. Nonetheless, AI marketing services revenue doubled over the course of 2025. During the earnings call, Founder and CEO Robin Li declared that “AI has become the new core of Baidu”, replacing traditional search. Although revenue from this “new core” now accounts for over 40% of the company’s overall revenue, it could not reverse the overall YoY decline. Baidu's robotaxi service Apollo Go reached 300,000 rides a week, as total cumulative rides reached 3.4 million. Although the company has not yet provided any revenue figures for Apollo Go, investors should be reassured by the recent $110 billion valuation of its peer Waymo, which is more than twice Baidu’s entire market capitalization. The company also made its first-ever dividend payment in 2026, continued its stock buyback, and reiterated plans to spin off its chipmaking unit Kunlunxin in a Hong Kong IPO. We believe the inquiry is routine, considering Trip.com’s dominant market position. As consumers and merchants appear to only benefit from the platform’s size, we expect the outcome will be limited to a nominal fine and potentially minor adjustments to ensure optionality for merchants. Trip.com continues to grow market share abroad, especially in the Asia- Pacific region, through strong brand recognition driven by strategic advertising and seamless booking experience. We noticed in our travels throughout Asia in 2025 the ubiquity of Trip.com’s logo in major international airports, even adorning some jet bridges. The company stated that they expect continued strong growth in third-country international travel booking, internal tourism in China, as well as inbound tourism in China. Trip.com played a role in the journeys of 20 million travelers in 2025. Trip.com intends to repurchase approximately $5 billion worth of its shares.

JD owns a large and growing marketplace for a wide variety of goods and offers its own logistics service. JD offers its services to over 500 million users. JD.com By The Numbers (Q4 2025) •Revenue +2% to RMB 342.8B ($49.7B) •Net Income RMB -0.7B (-$0.1B) •Net Margin 0% •Earnings per Share RMB -0.7 (-$0.1) JD’s fourth-quarter earnings showed a net loss but exceeded low analyst expectations on both the top and bottom lines, potentially signifying that the worst of the instant-commerce subsidy competition could be behind us. The revenue comparison with the fourth quarter of 2024 is challenging, as 2024’s platform activity benefited from consumers rushing to take advantage of trade-in subsidies for home appliances and electronics. The company indicated increased investment in its Jingxi budget E-Commerce platform for lower-tier cities, which is immensely positive not only for JD but also for the E-Commerce subsector, as it could signal that overall penetration is expanding once again. JD maintains a strong dividend and share repurchase policy. It will pay a dividend of $1 per American depositary receipt (ADR) on April 9, 2026. It also completed $3 billion in share buybacks in 2025 and has $2 billion remaining in its current program.
